Dewsbury-Hall suspension creates selection issue for Everton

The midfielder will be the first player to serve a suspension for yellow card accumulation, and so will miss this weekend's match against Crystal Palace.

David Moyes doesn't have the deepest squad at Everton, something he's made quite clear throughout the season. To make matters worse, he hasn't shown a great interest in giving time to some of the youngsters that the club brought in this summer, specifically left back Adam Aznou and winger Tyler Dibling, although the latter has seen some pitch time.

Aznou's continued exclusion, especially as starting left back Vitalii Mykolenko has struggled to stay fit to start the season, is a topic for another conversation, but it's indicative of Moyes' overall lack of flexibility with his squad, the recent cup match away to Wolves notwithstanding.

And so it will be interesting to watch what Moyes will do to handle his most recent selection headache: the suspension of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall due to murky (at best) yellow card accumulation.

Up to this point, Dewsbury-Hall has been among the first named to the team sheet for Moyes' starting unit, and has yet to be subbed out for a Premier League match this season. There's certainly reason to quibble with Moyes over whether the midfielder has earned that distinction, but the fact of the matter is he'll leave a hole in the Toffees' starting XI against Palace.

The big question is what choice Moyes will ultimately make in terms of filling the midfield role for Sunday's match at Hill Dickinson, Palace's first trip to Everton's new stadium.

The like-for-like swap is dropping Charly Alcaraz into Dewsbury-Hall's spot, although the Argentine is more of a direct forward player than KDH. Moyes tried this at Molineux last week, but pulled the plug at halftime, seemingly through no fault of Alcaraz's.

A second option involves finally giving Dibling, who also started the Wolves match, a chance to show what he can do with Everton's top unit instead of one weakened by Moyes' mass changes.

That setup would slide either Iliman Ndiaye or Jack Grealish into the central midfield, although it's more likely that the two creative attackers would have freedom to swap roles as they saw fit. This would allow Dibling to play on the right and create a lot for Palace to think about centrally near their own box.

Palace are off to a fantastic start to their campaign, having just ended Liverpool's unbeaten run to begin the year and find themselves in third place in the Premier League table after six matches, mostly on the strength of a stingy defense.

That means Everton will need to put out a strong lineup to breakdown Palace's lines, and they'll have to do so without Dewsbury-Hall.

But the good news is this squad has options, and it will be to David Moyes to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
