On the surface, Everton's reported interest in Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson makes sense.
He's a young player (he'll turn 21 in October) who has scored goals in the Premier League and is capped by Ireland, all before his 20th birthday. Ferguson is a big kid, too, standing 6'0" tall and showing a willingness to get into the physicality of the English game.
And yet, Bright can't seem to wait to get rid of him, and they've only allowed him 37 starts in 80 appearances, even though he's been part of the club since he joined the Premier League 2 squad in 2020 as a fifteen-year-old.
The Seagulls shipped him out on loan to West Ham in January 2025 and it truly could not have gotten any worse. Just one start in a mere eight appearances, amounting to 156 minutes and no goals with the Hammers before they sent him back to Brighton.
And now the Everton rumors are resurfacing, a song supporters have heard before, and that, again, make sense depending on how you look at them. But on the level where you would want to see, overall production even as a young player, Ferguson doesn't fit the bill.
Everton already have a young striker that needs minutes to improve in Youssef Chermiti and any moves to add depth at striker shouldn't be at his expense, especially considering the young Portuguese has shown more technical ability and flair in just 45 minutes than Ferguson ever has.
Ferguson would be redundant, and he doesn't solve a need, so spending money in this area would be a mistake for Everton, especially when better options are available, even if they cost more.
Maybe Ferguson ends up being a solid player at a top level, but it shouldn't be at Everton, not just because the club has bigger problems to solve, but also because he just isn't good enough.
