David Moyes' side is going to be even further impacted, although the timeline is unknown.

In a bit of a surprise, Everton sent out a notification that Manchester City loanee Jack Grealish had sustained a foot injury, and is set to meet with a specialist "in the coming days."

Grealish played the entire match in Sunday's 1-0 win over Aston Villa, and there's no indication of how he got injured. It feels like the likeliest cause is an in-training incident, but it also wouldn't be the first time a player got injured during a match, and it wasn't known about until later.

The England international has been a key cog in David Moyes' side since joining on loan in the summer, missing only the match against City in the Premier League, and, of course, he was suspended for the FA Cup loss to Sunderland.

Generally speaking, a foot injury doesn't feel like a good thing in terms of getting Grealish back sooner rather than later. Although the nature of the injury has yet to be revealed, even a mild foot sprain could result in missing a few weeks of action. A more major one could result in missing a few months, while a break or other injury could be even worse.

For an Everton squad that's desperately low on bodies, this is yet another blow to Moyes' ability to field a competitive team. The Toffees have two games next week, Monday at Hill Dickinson against Leeds and an away day to Brighton on Saturday, which isn't ideal under the best of circumstances, let alone the predicament the Blues find themselves in at the moment.

The silver lining is that Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye will be back after helping Senegal win the Africa Cup of Nations, and Ndiaye could slot into Grealish's spot on the left wing, leaving the right side in jeopardy yet again.

Hopefully, the prognosis for Grealish is reasonable, but given that there's no break in play until the middle of March, any time where the winger is unavailable is going to impact Everton's ability to field its best XI.

We'll keep an eye on the situation as it continues to progress. Until then, Moyes will need to cobble together the squad as best he can. Ideally, that includes playing time for Adam Aznou and Tyler Dibling, but time will tell if that's something the manager is interested in while Grealish is out of the lineup.
