Everton are reportedly looking into the status of Walter Benitez, a goalkeeper who has spent the last three seasons at PSV Eindhoven, playing and starting in 123 matches for the Dutch club. He was instrumental in the club's Eredivisie title this past season.
The Argentine also spent six seasons in Ligue 1 with Nice, serving as the French side's no.1 goalkeeper for five of those years. He began his career with three seasons at Quilmes in the Argentinian Primera Division.
The Toffees, of course, do not need a first-choice goalkeeper, with Jordan Pickford having started 316 matches for Everton since his arrival in 2017 and showing no signs of slowing down. But with both Joao Virginia and Asmir Begovic departing after this season, the England no.1 will need a backup, although history suggests that player will only make spot starts in early rounds of cup competitions.
Benitez is a little older than Pickford, but his experience would be quite valuable if he's willing to take another step up, while understanding that playing time will be limited. Crystal Palace is also said to be in the race to sign the player, although the situation there would be similar to Everton, as Dean Henderson is their starting keeper and still has three years left on his contract.
This isn't to say that the two Premier League sides will be Benitez's only options, especially if the Argentina international prefers to a chance to compete for a starting job.
One thing is for sure: Everton need at least one, but probably two, new goalkeepers to support Pickford, and they appear to be looking in the right places for that position at the moment.
