Everton welcomed League One side Mansfield Town to Hill Dickinson Stadium on Wednesday night in Liverpool and subsequently sent the visitors home with a 2-0 win in the Carabao Cup.
It wasn't always the most convincing showing from the home side, who struggled to be clinical, particularly in the first half, until second-half goals from Charly Alcaraz and Beto sealed Everton's place in the next round of the competition.
The Toffees dominated the ball during the first half, mostly on the strength of another excellent showing from Manchester City loanee Jack Grealish, who helped to create several chances throughout the first half for the home side.
Dwight McNeil and Grealish both had shots sail over the bar, while teenager Harrison Armstrong had an opportunity to set up Thierno Barry for a tap in, but opted to take a shot, which he fired straight into the arms of Mansfield goalkeeper Liam Roberts
Mansfield Town had a strong showing in the final five minutes of the first 45 minutes, but never troubled Everton goalkeeper Mark Travers, starting his first match since joining the Toffees this summer.
Everton came out on the front foot again in the second half, bossing proceedings yet again, but this time they were able to make good on the possession. A ball into the box to Armstrong was well held up by the teenager, and he was able to find Alcaraz behind him.
The Argentine curled it into the top right corner past Roberts to give Everton a much-deserved 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.
The home side continued to push for a second goal, creating several chances, but not quite finding the game-sealing goal.
Instead, the second half was most notable for the debut of Tyler Dibling, who joined Everton earlier in the week from Southampton. The teenager got half an hour in, often looking comfortable on the ball, but showing a player who needs more time with his teammates.
The Toffees put the game away in the 89th minute through a tap-in from Beto, who was found via a smart pass from James Garner to Armstrong, who slid it across the face of the goal to find the Everton striker to seal the match.
It wasn't always the most convincing display from the Toffees, but the job is done and they'll move onto the next round.
