Everton international break wrap up, as Blues return to Merseyside

The first international break of the season is done and dusted, and with players returning to Finch Farm this week to prepare for Aston Villa, let's take a look at how those out on duty for their country faired.

For a club with a relatively small squad, Everton's senior team had nine players called out on international duty, including loanee Harrison Armstrong.

Most featured as part of their country's World Cup qualifying, as they hope to secure a spot in next summer's competition that already features 18 countries, including the three host nations, with 30 slots left to be won in the coming months.

There will be two more international breaks to help decide who'll take those slots, one in early October and the other roughly a month later, which will make for a rather stop/start feel to the Premier League season.

But with Everton players set to return to training to prepare for Aston Villa this weekend, let's look back at how the Toffees did while away playing for their respective countries.

Jordan Pickford, England

The Everton goalkeeper started both matches for his country, keeping a clean sheet in both a 2-0 win over Andorra last Saturday and a 5-0 thrashing of Serbia yesterday.

Pickford has not allowed a goal for the Three Lions since a 2-1 loss to Greece in the UEFA Nations League last October. Going back to last summer's Euros, he's allowed just six total goals in 11 matches played.

Jake O'Brien & Mark Travers, Republic of Ireland

O'Brien started both matches for Ireland, both at center back, logging full 90 minutes in both contests. Ireland drew with Hungary 2-2 on Saturday, while losing to Armenia 2-1 yesterday.

Travers did not play minutes in either match, serving as the squad's backup goalkeeper while away.

The Republic of Ireland sit in last place in UEFA's Group F with 1 point, tied for that slot with Hungary. Portugal leads the group with six points.

Tom King, Wales

The Welsh side played one qualifier match, a 1-0 win over Kazakhstan, and one friendly, a 1-0 loss to Canada, neither of which saw any time for the Everton third keeper.

Wales is level on points with Belgium in Group J, although the Belgians have a game in hand.

Idrissa Gana Gueye & Iliman Ndiaye, Senegal

Ndiaye started Senegal's first match of the break, a 2-0 win over Sudan last Friday, playing 82 minutes before being subbed off. Gana was on the bench for that match.

The midfielder started and played all 90 minutes in his country's next match, a 3-2 victory over the Congo DR, as did Ndiaye.

Senegal leads Group B in the CAF with 18 points out of 8 matches. This, of course, is just the start of a busy year for the African nations, as they'll finish World Cup qualifying in November, and follow that up with the AFCON in December and into January.

Beto, Guinea-Bissau

The Everton striker started his first match away from the club, a 1-1 draw with Sierra Leone, playing 66 minutes before coming off in that game last Thursday.

He was a 61st minute substitute in their 2-0 win over Djibouti four days later. Beto's country is unlikely to qualify for the World Cup, and will not feature in AFCON later this year.

Tyler Dibling, England U21s

One of Everton's newest players featured for the England U21s during the break, starting their 2-0 win over Kazakhstan on Monday and providing an assist on a goal by Jobe Bellingham to kick start England's U21 Euro qualifying campaign.

The winger came off after 62 minutes for Crystal Palace's Romain Esse.

Harrison Armstrong, England U19s

The Everton loanee to Preston North End started two of the three England U19 matches during the break, starting the 2-0 win over the Ukraine last Wednesday and the 4-1 thrashing of the Netherlands yesterday, while coming on as a 69th minute sub in the 3-3 draw against Spain on Saturday.

The young midfielder scored in each of the latter matches.
