As previously noted, Everton have shown interest in Manchester City standout James McAtee, and have reportedly reached out to the Cityzens about possibly selling the player.
McAtee is coming off an excellent showing for the England U21 squad that won the U21 Euros. He was selected to the Team of the Tournament, scored one goal, and added two assists while completing 85% of his passes in six matches.
The 22-year-old having a breakout performance in the tournament is great, but it also puts Everton in a difficult situation because it means other clubs will also be sniffing around the player in hopes of convincing him to join.
But if Everton were able to sell McAtee on the project the Toffees have in process, on the new stadium, on new ownership, it would be a major victory for the Blues. McAtee is a young, up-and-coming player who could immediately step in and make a difference for an Everton side that lacks creativity, especially on the right wing.
And while McAtee played more centrally for England, a lot of his work came as a right-sided attacker for Manchester City, suggesting that he could step into the position if called upon, while also giving David Moyes the versatility also provided by the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Charly Alcaraz.
He isn't a finished product, but he does have six Premier League goals to his name, after scoring three times for the Sky Blues last year and three times while on loan with Sheffield United during the 2023/24 season.
This isn't to say that McAtee will solve all of Everton's goal scoring problems or that he won't have his ups-and-downs when asked to be fixture in the starting XI, but it will be nice to continue to see the Toffees trying to get younger and building toward the future.
McAtee, alongside Thierno Barry, would be a major statement for the new era of Everton.
