It's not quite a storied rivalry, but Everton have played Spurs a total of 182 times since both clubs were formed. The perennial top-flight sides do battle again in Merseyside on Sunday.

Several players have had notable stints with both clubs. Andros Townsend spent four seasons in North London before eventually finding his way to Goodison Park. Deli Ali was an infamous failed signing for Everton from Spurs in recent seasons.

More than two decades ago, the likes of David Ginola and Paul Gascoigne played for the Toffees in the twilight of their careers, but will more fondly be remembered for their time at Tottenham.

However, these are five Everton players you may have forgotten played for Spurs at all:

1. Louis Saha

Everton: 2008 - 2011
Tottenham: 2011 - 2012

The fondest memory of Louis Saha in an Everton shirt is undoubtedly his goal in the 2009 FA Cup Final. The Frenchman took just 25 seconds to break the deadlock, with Chelsea eventually crushing Everton’s dreams of silverware. Saha would make 115 appearances across 3 and a half seasons at Goodison Park. In 2009/2010, he scored 15 goals in all competitions.

The Frenchman became a rotation player in 2011/2012 before leaving for Spurs on a free transfer in January. He featured 12 times for the North Londoners before finishing his career with stints at Sunderland and Lazio.

2. Nick Barmby

Tottenham: 1992 - 1995
Everton: 1996 - 2000

Nick Barmby’s most famous career move was the shortest trip of all. He made the switch from blue to red in 2000, signing with rivals Liverpool and becoming the first player since Dave Hickson in 1959 to do so. It may have darkened his doors from an Everton perspective, but Barmby was a solid player in his three seasons at Goodison.

His 1999/2000 exploits saw him score nine Premier League goals. That led to a 6 million pound move to Liverpool that summer. Barmby started his professional career at Tottenham in 1992, and finished it at Hull City.

3. Steven Pienaar

Everton: 2007 - 2010, 2012 - 2016
Tottenham: 2011 - 2012

Nothing screams missing home than returning to a club a season after leaving. Steven Pienaar did just that in January 2012, after joining Spurs in the January window a year previous. He’d endured an injury hampered calendar year in North London. Everton fans will need little reminder of the South African’s impact with the Toffees.

Pienaar joined on a season-long loan in 2007 before Everton made the switch permanent. He became an attacking force on the left wing and was renowned for his partnership with Leighton Baines. Pienaar made 229 appearances across 9 seasons.

4. Pat Van Den Hauwe

Everton: 1984 - 1989
Tottenham: 1989 - 1994

It might be revisionist to think ‘Psycho Pat’ is most known for his time at Goodison Park, but his trophy cabinet might back that up. Van Den Hauwe was quick to make his mark in an Everton shirt, winning the league title and Cup Winners Cup in his debut season in 1984/1985. He followed that up with scoring the goal that won the Toffees another first division crown at Norwich in 1987.

Pat would end up on the losing side of three FA Cup finals in the mid-to-late 1980s before making the move to Tottenham. In his second season there, he finally lifted FA Cup silverware and went on to spend two seasons at Millwall.

5. Gylfi Sigurdsson

Tottenham: 2012 - 2014
Everton: 2017 - 2022

Many fans might underestimate the impact of Gylfi Sigurdsson in an Everton shirt. He spent his final year at Goodison Park on the sidelines battling legal issues, but occupied the number 10 role for four seasons. The Icelandic playmaker was a solid penalty taker and understated goalscorer in spurts, coming up with 14 goals in all competitions in 2018-2019.

Sigurdsson’s Premier League journey started with Swansea, but he made a permanent switch to Tottenham in 2012 from parent club Hoffenheim. He can look back on 9 seasons as a consistent Premier League starter.
