Everton rivals moving closer to signing £30 million striker

Chelsea and Manchester United have both held talks with the Everton target, who is departing Ipswich Town this summer.

That player, of course, is Liam Delap, who is widely expected to leave Portman Road after the Tractor Boys were relegated from the Premier League.

Ever since that relegation was confirmed, the rumour mill has been in overdrive with constant speculation about where the former Manchester City youth product might end up.

Everton were strongly linked with the player, and improving the team's threadbare striking options is surely one of David Moyes' top transfer priorities this summer.

Although Beto's form has radically improved under the Scot, after the former Udinese man barely got a look-in under Sean Dyche, many Evertonians are not convinced he is the answer by any means.

And with Dominic Calvert-Lewin's future still shrouded in uncertainty — along with a number of other players — and Youssef Chermiti having hardly kicked a ball in anger since his signing, a summer move for a new centre-forward looks very likely.

The Blues desperately need to improve their record in front of goal after managing a paltry forty-one strikes this season, which, with one game to go, is fewer than any side in the Premier League apart from the three relegated teams.

Delap has done well — and been more productive than any Everton striker — in his first Premier League campaign, notching twelve league goals and impressing with his pace, strength, and finishing despite Ipswich's struggles overall.

Given his qualities and the fact that he is an English forward, it is certain he will have plenty of suitors as he ponders his next career move.

Not surprisingly, several other Premier League clubs are interested in him, and reports today indicate two of them might be closing in on a deal after holding talks with the player.

All this is still though paper talk, and as yet it doesn't appear that Delap is actually any closer to agreeing to concrete terms to move on to pastures new.

Everton could offer Delap something of the other clubs might not be able to, which is a guaranteed starting slot and the chance to build on his impressive debut season in the English top flight.

But then again, as with other young English talents being linked with the Blues, the attraction of European football, which the likes of Newcastle United and Chelsea can offer, could well sway him in making his decision.

Regardless of what happens with Delap, the Toffees need to be in the market for striking talent because this team cannot progress without a genuine and consistent goal-scoring threat leading the line.
