With Thierno Barry nearly done, it appears that most of the transfer rumors buzzing around Everton are now focused on one particular area of the pitch: the right wing.
The latest scuttlebutt focuses on an exciting young Japanese winger currently playing for Real Sociedad in La Liga, Takefusa Kubo. Having just turned 24 a month ago, Kubo might be looking to take the next step in his development after three seasons in Donostia.
Kubo scored seven times for Sociedad last year, adding four assists, making it his third straight campaign with 10+ goal contributions for the club, who finished 11th in La Liga this past season.
The Japan international has seen his name come up repeatedly for the Toffees throughout the summer, and with the first major signing nearly over the line, it appears that Everton are turning their attention toward strengthening that disappointing right side.
Having already been linked with others like James McAtee and Timothy Weah, Kubo offers something different than the England U21 international or the American because of his smooth dribbling, pace, and chance creation.
Of that group, he may be the most natural winger, although he does provide some versatility as a potential attacking midfielder as well. He's not the biggest guy (5'7", 139, per FBRef), but his precise dribbling and passing acumen should allow him to overcome that in the Premier League.
Who knows which direction Everton will end up taking in terms of their new winger, but it is clear from the rumors that they recognize the need for the position.
Transfermrkt also includes a nugget that may impact the sale. They note a 60 million termination clause in his contract with Sociedad and that Real Madrid gets a 50% gain from any sale. Time will tell if these elements impact his ability to be sold, if he indeed wants to go.
While the fee may be high (market value is around €30 million, or £25), this is the type of exciting young player that Everton should be eyeing as they continue to build the squad for next season and beyond.
