No matter how hard they tried, Everton were never going to create a perfect final day for Goodison Park.
It wasn't for lack of effort, although the plans for the post-match celebration felt rushed and underwhelming, but the club had no control over things like how the match would go or other elements such as that.
The match turned out to be an appropriate finish to the Toffees' time at Goodison, featuring a strong first half showing from the boys in Blue that dissipated as the match went on, leaving both teams searching for some late-game drama that never came.
And that part was good and it felt right.
But in the end, it was the Everton supporters in attendance, both in the ground and the thousands surrounding Goodison before and after the match, who made the moment the special day that it was.
Evertonians knew how vital the day was, and so they kept the Spirit of the Blues going throughout the day, with many showing up several hours before the match, with such fanfare around the arrival of the team bus that they needed to find an alternate route to the stadium.
All you need to see is this collection of photos from the Liverpool Echo, and you know exactly what this day meant to all the Evertonians in attendance on Sunday.
So in the end, it mattered less how the team performed (although a loss would have dampened things a bit around the ground), because the supporters were not going to let this day be anything but monumental.
And because they deemed it so, it was.
