Game used for reference: Wolves 3-2 West Ham, 2025/2026 EFL Cup, Round 2
Wolves have not had the greatest start to their season in the Premier League, and certain sects of football enthusiasts have them as a possible relegation contender. Nevertheless, there’s never an easy Premier League away day, a fact that Everton had to face when they lost against Leeds.
Wolves are a team that has a lot of holes defensively. Teams are able to exploit their half spaces and bypass their entire backline with a few well-placed passes. Against West Ham in the Carabao Cup, they struggled against crosses into the box as well.
Offensively, they have a good presence in the air, which will be tough for Everton’s makeshift backline to handle.
If Everton wants to win this match, they can’t let Wolves win the aerial battles both in defense and attack. Thierno Barry has received a good run of minutes, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts again due to his heading ability.
Defensively, Michael Keane and James Tarkowski will have to be physical against whoever Wolves pick to replace Jørgen Strand Larsen, who will miss the game due to an ongoing transfer saga, and do their best to take them out of the game.
It would have been great to see Adam Aznou feature at full back as well and give Jack Grealish the ability to roam inside the opposition’s box, but the teenager's injury won't allow him to be involved. Wolves won’t be able to contain a locked-in Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye.
Everton have the ability to come out of this game with a point, but don’t be surprised if Moyes and his squad bring back three points to Liverpool.
