First Everton starting XI at Hill Dickinson is underwhelming

After a poor showing last week at Elland Road, David Moyes goes back to a certain square peg situation for the home opener.

After years of hard work, the opening Premier League match at Everton's new Hill Dickinson Stadium is here. Bright and Hove Albion are in town to take on the Toffees, and David Moyes has named his starting XI for the context.

With Jarrad Branthwaite, VItalii Mykolenko, and Nathan Patterson missing due to injury, the intrigue around Moyes' starting group was mostly centered on one position: left back.

With options limited, Moyes has gone with the same idea he had from last week. James Garner looks to be beginning the match at left back. Adam Aznou is at least on the bench this time:

The main issue with the lineup using Garner at left back is that it forces Moyes to include Tim Iroegbunam in midfield next to Idrissa Gana Gueye, and the young Englishman struggled last week, seemingly unaware of what was being asked of him.

The rest of the back line and midfield are unchanged, with the attack being where Moyes has elected to make some alterations to the group.

Iliman Ndiaye will likely start on the right in place of Charly Alcaraz, as Jack Grealish comes into the starting XI for the first time as an Everton player. He'll probably occupy the left, although expect there to be some fluidity between Grealish, Ndiaye, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Also of note, Thierno Barry will make his debut Premier League start for Everton after an unimpressive start from Beto last week. To be fair, if Everton produce the same level of creativity this week as they did against Leeds, it won't make much of a difference who starts at striker.

With kickoff just under an hour away, this isn't the brightest starting lineup that David Moyes could have produced, but it identifies where the need for reinforcements still lie as the end of the transfer window nears.
