It’s crazy to think that just four years ago, Lucas Digne was an Everton player under Rafa Benitez, who was struggling for relevance after being a key starter for previous managers. Now, he’s on the verge of completing a move to perhaps the best club in the world.

Alas, his tale is similar to many other stars who’ve left Everton. They showed flashes of stardom, but outside circumstances prevented them from fully breaking out with the Toffees.

Digne was signed by the Toffees from Barcelona in 2018 and joined Aston Villa in the January 2022 window, partly due to a falling out with Rafa Benitez. Digne was a worthy replacement for Leighton Baines, and he was yet another player whose career at Everton was cut short due to off-the-field matters.

With Aston Villa, Digne was the main man at left back and began to cement his place with the French national team, and he was called up to play at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While France is gearing up for a crucial semifinal matchup against Spain, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Digne will join PSG after the World Cup, with the French side paying Aston Villa’s release clause.

The Toffees haven’t been the same at the left back position since Digne’s departure, and it’s tough not to imagine how things might have gone differently if he had stuck around for the trials and tribulations that came shortly after his move to Aston Villa.
