Former Everton striker possibly on the move to recently promoted side

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's time at Everton was complicated to say the least. But now, it looks like he is an option for a recently promoted EFL Championship team.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, or DCL for short, was at Everton for nine years, making over 200 appearances for the club. His tenure at the club had some high moments but also some lows that happened more recently. He was offered a new contract by the club early last season, but he decided to not pursue that option.

Now, DCL is a free agent, but there are several suitors, one of them being Sunderland, who have invested heavily this transfer window in an attempt to stick around in the Premier League.

This move could be a good one for DCL, who obviously struggled to net in goals for the past few years at Everton. For strikers, atmoshpere and streaks matter a lot, and DCL could see this as a fresh start.

However, DCL wouldn't be walking into the starting lineup at Sunderland, who have also brought in Marc Guiu to compete for the striker position. Guiu was part of Chelsea's Conference League side that won it all, scoring six goals in seven games.

There is some doubt that DCL would accept a move to Sunderland. The risk of relegation is extremely high, as newly promoted sides always find it hard to compete against established teams, and a poor season there could spell the end of what was a promising opportunity.

Let's also remind ourselves that he rejected a contract with Everton this past season. Sure, there were some doubts regarding Sean Dyche and the state of the team, but the chance for him to continue at the club he's been at for most of his career was there, and he denied it. Perhaps he was looking for a move up the ladder, not down.

Everton have since moved on and brought in Thierno Barry to compete with Beto, but if DCL does decide to sign with Sunderland, we could see a reunion between him and the club that made him who he is today, for better or worse.
