Anthony Gordon was deemed by many as a superb up-and-coming talent for the Toffees during his early years. However, he never truly broke out for Everton, and when he moved to Newcastle United, there was hope that a change of scenery would suit him.
Well, he hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, but he has notched over 140 appearances for the club, and now, there’s other teams knocking on the door for the 24-year-old.
According to BBC Sport, “Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal are all reportedly in a race” for Gordon, and Newcastle have put a £95m price tag on him.
Whether Gordon is worth such a hefty price is up for debate, but what is concrete is that Gordon has developed into a more balanced player since he left Merseyside. His offensive output for Newcastle dwarfs the numbers he achieved for Everton. According to Transfermarkt, Gordon has grabbed 60 goal contributions for Newcastle in 141 games.
For comparison, Gordon had less than 20 goal contributions in 78 games for Everton. Gordon had moments of brilliance, but also showed several lapses in judgement that hindered Everton at times.
On a per-rate basis, Gordon has improved massively, and considering he’s just now entering his prime, it makes sense why teams are looking to win him over. He’s also tactically versatile, as he’s able to play all across the front line, a skill that few other English wingers possess.
Anthony Gordon is yet another frustrating example of a player who blossoms and fulfills their potential after leaving the Toffees.
