The Toffees have been in the market for wide attacking talent ever since the summer transfer window opened and they let loanees Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom go back to their parent clubs.
Meanwhile, the Tractor Boys experienced what now seems the almost inevitable relegation from the Premier League of newly promoted sides at the end of last season.
This obviously left them vulnerable to losing their most prized and talented young stars, with Liam Delap becoming the first to jump ship when he moved to Chelsea last month.
Everton, of course, were in the hunt for the powerful centre-forward, but could not compete with the allure of Champions League football that the West London club can offer.
One other young player who had caught the eye in the last Premier League campaign was Omari Hutchinson, and the 21-year-old flew out to Slovakia with the England Under-21's for the European Championships after the domestic season was done.
England eventually successfully retained their title with a dramatic 3-2 extra-time win over Germany in the final, in which Hutchinson himself scored the second goal.
Having proved his quality on the international stage, the young winger will presumably now be looking to stay in England's top flight and further progress his career.
And according to some reports that’s exactly what he is hoping to do. Football Insider claim Hutchinson wants a move to another Premier League club this summer with Everton in pole position to complete a deal for him.
But there is always a caveat, and were the Blues to consider a deal, the paper says West Ham United are also sniffing around the pacey winger, especially with the Hammers likely to lose Mohammed Kudus this summer.
In addition, Ipswich are understandably loathe to lose one of their key attacking threats as they plot a swift return to the top flight, and as his stock had risen since England's Euro's triumph, they will not be keen to sell.
Hutchinson does have a release clause in his contract, which is said to be £35 million, but will Everton boss David Moyes will be willing to trigger it?
Given that the Toffees are already committed to spending around £30 million to secure the signature of Thierno Barry (a transfer that looks very close to completion) and might only have about £70 million in the transfer kitty in total, that would leave precious little else to finance further deals.
And, as we all know, the Blues are desperately short of player numbers, with additions needed at full-back, in midfield, and attack.
While Hutchinson would add needed pace and a genuine wide attacking threat and seems a better bet than Jack Harrison returning, particularly as he is young and should develop further, his numbers were not hugely impressive last season as he only managed five goal involvements.
In truth, this looks another of those speculative stories and given the pressure Moyes is under to find affordable players across the board, I think it is an unlikely this transfer will happen.
