Such a transfer could, in theory, facilitate a move in this window by Everton for Chelsea's young striker Liam Delap, who the Blues, of course, tried to sign last year.
If the Three Lions' hero Kane were to return to these shores, it would surely mean precious little playing time for Delap next season, so a move away would seem to make sense for his career, too.
Toffees manager David Moyes was very keen to bring Delap to Merseyside twelve months ago but lost out on the then Ipswich frontman to the West Londoner's more attractive location and money.
Delap struggled badly, though, and only managed one goal in the Premier League as Chelsea flattered to deceive and finished way off the pace in the title race.
Meanwhile, Everton's own strikers also failed to set the league on fire, although the player Moyes signed instead of Delap, Thierno Barry, scored eight times and Beto added nine more for the Blues.
While Barry's production was not spectacular, he is young, it was his first campaign in the English topflight, and there were signs during the season that he was finding his feet after a shaky start.
But a lack of goals once again did hamper the Toffees' attempts to qualify for Europe in last season's run-in as Everton fell short in the end.
I think there was enough evidence to suggest it is worth persisting with the Frenchman for another season at least, and so perhaps the pressure to sign a third striker might not be as urgent.
However, there have been rumours earlier this summer that the Toffees could be willing to sell Barry if the right fee was offered, although nothing substantial has come of it as yet.
The arrival of England's captain Kane at Stamford Bridge, were that to happen, would probably significantly reduce any fee Chelsea would want for Delap and so make him more affordable to Everton, given the financial constraints the Blues appear to be under.
Delap has the sort of qualities the Blues boss looks for in a centre-forward, and he certainly showed he was able to score goals in the Premier League with Ipswich.
Moyes' overwhelming priority after adding midfielder Hayden Hackney earlier in the transfer window, is now finding a new right-back, so solving what has been a longstanding problem position for successive managers. With the news today, Everton also possibly need to replace Idrissa Gueye too.
Adding another forward to his options up front might make sense, though, if Delap was available for a considerably lower price, and so the Englishman finally ending up at the Hill Dickinson may yet still happen.
