Out-of-favor Brazilian could be an option for Everton, although the fit is curious

Samuel Lino is not in Atletico Madrid's plans for this season, and Everton look to be keeping a keen eye on the player.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Samuel Lino is reportedly training with the youth team and is not part of manager Diego Simone's plans for the upcoming season.

The 25-year-old Brazilian did not see much of the pitch last season, playing just over 2200 minutes in 45 matches, only 28 of which were starts. He was productive when given opportunities, scoring four times and adding eight assists, but his xG (7.1) suggests he underperformed on that front.

The link to Everton is an interesting one because it doesn't appear to fit what the Blues are looking for.

Lino played mostly on the left side for Atletico last year when he did get on the pitch, with some sporadic opportunities as a CAM and interestingly, at left back or wingback. According to match logs on FBref, he played just 16 minutes on the right side, in a cameo appearance against Sevilla last December.

The left back appearances make him a little more intriguing, with Everton looking to add depth alongside Vitalii Mykolenko at the position, but since his arrival for the Spanish club in 2022, he's been more used as a winger than a fullback.

Ultimately, he's a potentially versatile player, but the concern would be that his lack of a true position wouldn't work in his favor in coming to Everton. Not to mention that the Toffees' best attacking player, Illiman Ndiaye, is also preferred on the left by David Moyes.

As a loan option who can be a chess piece to fill in at multiple positions, it wouldn't be the worst move for Everton, but that feels like a exceedingly less pressing need at this moment as the Blues look to rebuild their squad for the upcoming season.

Adding depth will be crucial, but unless you're committing to Lino as your second-choice left back, I'm not sure where he fits on this squad.
