Everton final points appeal decision set for last week of season

The Toffees will learn whether their second appeal against a two point deduction under Profit and Sustainability Regulations is successful in the final week of the Premier League campaign.

According to media reports Everton will have to wait until they are preparing for the trip to the Emirates Stadium to play Arsenal on the last day, before knowing if either or both of those points will be restored to them.

It is hardly a great situation to be hanging on until days before that match before getting a verdict finally regarding this second deduction.

But then given the chaotic and hugely destabilizing nature of this whole process, it is hardly a surprise!

From the beginning the PSR process has been fraught with controversy and uncertainty with the first points deduction announcement in November coming after leaked media reports claimed the Premier League wanted an unprecedented twelve points taken off the Blues.

As it was the commission which reported on the case gave Everton a ten point penalty, itself never before seen in English football history.

That was of course reduced on appeal to six but not until the Toffees had played three months with those ten points - fairly won on the pitch - knocked off.

At the time the Blues were on a record-equaling run of thirteen games without a win which had seen the team slide further down the Premier League table.

Then came the second charge and another two point deduction just as the club were trying to recover from November's hit, and once more embroiled as a result in a relegation dogfight.

Fortunately, regardless of any of these shenanigans, Everton managed to take their fate into their own hands in time and last weekend's 1-0 over Brentford has secured Premier League status again.

They travel to Luton Town on Friday knowing that regardless of that or any other result in the remainder of this campaign the club will be playing top flight football again next season.

That is unless the Toffees get pulled under by the off-field chaos over the issue of who owns the club; itself still to be resolved of course.

What an insane season this has been and I for one cannot wait for it to be over!
