Everton manager David Moyes is known to be a firm admirer of the talented young Scottish international winger Ben Doak, and is mulling over a move for him in this transfer window.
The Toffees lack options out wide, especially since the two loanees, Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom, brought in last summer, have returned to their clubs, and need reinforcements in attack, with more goals a particularly pressing problem to be solved.
Neither Harrison nor Lindstrom impressed last season, with just a solitary league goal between them, hardly enough productivity to justify turning their loans into permanent deals.
So, as well as bringing in another striker (which is an obvious priority), Everton really need more pace and goals from out wide, with the manager now only having Illman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil as first-choice options on the flanks.
Links to various wide attacking players have been constant in recent weeks, with other Championship players, such as Tom Fellows of West Bromwich Albion, being among the names that have surfaced a few times.
However, Doak seems to be the favourite, and these stories won't go away with a mooted move for the Liverpool winger seeming increasingly likely.
As a prospect, Doak has the qualities that Everton need. He has plenty of pace and would offer a creative and goal-scoring outlet out wide, although he only managed three goals last season at Boro.
Part of the season for that relative lack of goals last season was the fact that he spent a considerable part of the campaign injured.
For such a young player to have serious injuries of this kind is worrying and a possible red flag when considering a move for him.
Another major issue is the fee being quoted for the 19-year-old. Liverpool reportedly want around £30 million for him, and that seems a very considerable outlay for a young player with injury problems who is also unproven in the Premier League.
Given that there has been plenty of bad blood between the two Merseyside clubs over recent years, with last season's Goodison Park derby a perfect example, it might be a more challenging transfer than for others, with the last player moving across the city being Gary Ablett way back in 1992.
With all this in mind, I think Everton should explore other possibilities because although Doak certainly ticks the boxes in terms of what Moyes needs out wide, there are a lot of potential issues with this transfer and getting it over the line.
