Predicting Everton's starting XI for Carabao Cup clash at Molineux

For the second time in four matches, Everton will travel to Molineux to take on Wolves, this time for a cup tie.

Trying to figure out how managers will line up for cup ties in the middle of a busy campaign is a complicated task. That is even truer when a squad is as thin in some areas as Everton's and even more so when a Premier League opponent is drawn.

Granted, this Premier League squad is one that Everton have already beaten in an away clash just 20 days ago, not to mention the fact that the opponent, Wolverhampton Wanderers, is currently bottom of the league table, having collected zero points in five matches.

So maybe there isn't much concern for David Moyes and his Everton side, who will be looking to make a good cup run this season, so long as it doesn't create any massive issues for their position in the league.

But the circumstance could also allow Moyes a chance to rotate the team a bit, and see what he has in some of his younger players now that the squad is more or less fully healthy, save for Jarrad Branthwaite.

Nobody knows for sure what Moyes will do outside of the man himself, but let's take a chance to see if we can predict who'll start the match for Everton on Tuesday evening.

Everton Starting Lineup vs Wolves (4-2-3-1)

Goalkeeper & Defenders

Jordan Pickford (GK): Mark Travers got the nod for the first round of the competition, but at this point, it's usually Pickford back in the mix.

Adam Aznou (LB): Do I think Moyes will do this? Probably not. Should he? 100%. The kid needs minutes and this is as good a time as any to...ahem...throw him to the wolves.

Michael Keane (CB): He's been a good deputy while Branthwaite has been out, and he's definitely going back to the bench soon, so you may as well get a run out of him now.

Jake O'Brien (CB): The same line of thinking around Aznou, but this one is weirder because O'Brien has played a ton at right back. He needs game time at his natural position.

Seamus Coleman (RB): As with Aznou, I don't know how many changes Moyes wants to make here. The club captain would be a good counter to the young Moroccan's more attack-minded play style.

Midfielders

Tim Iroegbunam (CM): James Garner could use a breather, as could Idrissa Gana Gueye, so I'm bringing in Iroegbunam, even though he offers something quite different than either of those players.

Merlin Röhl (CM): It's possible I'm overthinking how many changes Moyes will make, but just like with Aznou and O'Brien, he needs to see the pitch.

Charly Alcaraz (CAM): Is Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall undroppable in Moyes' mind? We'll find out based on whether he starts on Tuesday. I'd like to see Charly get a run longer than seven minutes.

Forwards

Iliman Ndiaye (LW): I'll speculate that Moyes took the Senegal international off on Saturday because he wants to use him on Tuesday and give Jack Grealish a bit of a rest. The Manchester City loanee should be on the bench if needed.

Tyler Dibling (RW): It's time. The kid can't sit forever, and this would be an ideal time for him to get a full match.

Thierno Barry (CF): It's pretty clear that neither striking option has lit the world on fire so far, so the back and forth will continue until either Barry or Beto grabs the starting role by going on a scoring run.
