Stamford Bridge curse is another hurdle for Everton to overcome

Like Old Trafford and the Vitality Stadium, the Toffees will look to break another extended run of futility on Saturday.

To say that Everton has had a hard time in travels to the capital to take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge might be an understatement.

FotMob tracks the fixtures between the two back to December 2010, during which time the two sides in blue have met at Chelsea's ground 17 times. The home side has 11 wins, with the other six finishing with shared points.

But the sadness goes back even further for Everton. The Merseysiders haven't won at Stamford Bridge since November 26, 1994, a 1-0 victory in London with a goal from Paul Rideout proving enough to secure three points for the Toffees.

It is a truly sad state of affairs for Everton, one that is only ever-so-slightly improved upon because the Toffees have been less dismal at home against Chelsea, a face that won't help them this weekend.

Just over 30 years is a long time to go without doing much of anything, let alone winning a match at an away venue. For comparison, in that time frame, Everton have won at Anfield twice (2021, 1999), which seems massive, but is still rather sad as well.

Given the state of the Premier League table, Toffee supporters may find some room for optimism heading into Saturday's trip to the capital.

Seventh-placed Everton sit just one point behind 5th place Chelsea, and recent form would seem to favor the away side heading into the match.

Chelsea's most recent league contests have been a 1-1 draw to Arsenal at home on November 30, a 3-1 loss to Leeds at Elland Road, and last weekend's 0-0 draw away to Bournemouth. Those are sandwiched in between a 3-0 win at home against Barcelona and an 2-1 away loss to Atalanta in the Champions League.

Everton are running hotter, having won four of the last five over the likes of Fulham at home, away to Manchester United and Bournemouth, and home to Forest, with an absolute stinker at home to Newcastle in the middle of a pair of wins.

Still, trips to grounds where Everton haven't won will always bring trepidation for fans, who'll no doubt cling to recent successes at United and Bournemouth, two places the Toffees hadn't won at in years (or ever) for comfort.

As the fixtures tighten toward the end of the calendar year, Everton will look to break yet another curse.
