The final relegation spot is (partially) in Everton's hands

The battle between West Ham and Tottenham for the third relegation spot will come down to the final day.

After a few major run-ins with relegation, it feels somewhat appropriate that Everton will have something to say about who'll be the third team to drop down to the Championship for the 2026/27 season.

Wolves and Burnley are confirmed, to be replaced in the top flight by Coventry City (led by former Everton manager Frank Lampard) and Ipswich Town, with the third team to be decided this coming weekend between Middlesbrough (replacing suspended Southampton) and Hull City.

Who the winner of that match at Wembley on Saturday will be won't be known until Sunday, since both West Ham and Tottenham could still be the club to go down.

For Spurs, the formula is easy. A result against Everton in North London sees them through, leading to a second consecutive 17th-place finish for the club.

For the Hammers, it's more difficult. They host Leeds United at the London Stadium, with the visitors having nothing to play for outside of a higher finish in the table, as a win could push them as high as 11th, depending on other results.

Similarly, Everton can only play for positioning, with a possible 10th-place finish as the apex for the Toffees.

But after all the talk about Europe, it feels a little sad to play for a few million pounds, albeit pounds that could make a difference in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Instead, Everton should relish the pettiness of being able to partially decide who gets relegated from the Premier League.

Beating Tottenham doesn't mean that Spurs go down, but it does mean that West Ham have a fighting chance if they can beat Leeds at home. If Everton capitulate, something the Blues have done quite a bit of in recent weeks, then the Hammers are done and dusted.

This is a real "Everton have a chance to do the funniest thing..." energy, something that the Toffees and their supporters haven't been privy to in recent years. In those seasons where the club needed to stay alive, there was little room for enjoying the ride.

Now that Europe is essentially out of the question, Everton should have a go at playing spoilers for someone else, and give some players who haven't seen much of the pitch an opportunity to shine.

Because outside of that, the final day doesn't matter much for Everton. So why not have a bit of fun?
