With the transfer window closing in just a matter of days, Everton still has plenty of work to do in order to improve the squad.
Sure, they've signed eight players already, a good mixture of older guys who are ready to contribute immediately (i.e., Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall) and a few younger guys (like Thierno Barry, Adam Aznou, and Tyler Dibling) who'll hopefully be part of the squad for the long term.
But the window feels incomplete, as Everton still has key positions, such as right back and central midfield, that need to be improved before Monday's deadline.
So it's no surprise to see that David Moyes and the rest of the transfer committee are working hard to get a few more players over the line, and it's also not shocking to see that Moyes may be trying to set up reunions with some of his old players.
The club has been linked to Tomáš Souček already this window, a connection that felt both inevitable and uncreative. And yet, with just days to go, it appears that Moyes is returning to that well after having an earlier move rejected.
Souček, who just turned 30 in February, has been with West Ham since 2019, joining from Slavia Prague in his native Czech Republic. The midfielder has never been a terribly prolific goal scorer or creative force (his highest goal total was 10 in 2020/21 and he's never eclipsed three assists), some of which comes down to his lack of elite athelticism.
But he's been a consistently available player, and he hasn't played in fewer than 38 total matches in a season since his first year in England.
And while that's a great attribute, the question is where he'd play on this Everton side. He won't start over someone like Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and maybe not James Garner, and he isn't good enough in the tackle to step into Idrissa Gana Gueye's role.
As a depth guy, especially if Harrison Armstrong goes out on loan, it wouldn't be the worst move, unless you consider the fact that he'll cost a decent transfer fee and who knows what wages he'll ask for given his role.
He also cannot be the only midfielder added, as this Everton squad needs someone who can spell Gana and step in while he's away at AFCON. Souček is not that guy.
If Souček comes as a deadline day deal after Everton has added a starting right back and a backup for Gana, then it isn't the worst move in the world. But if the Czech Republic international is expected to fill any of those roles, then that is a problem.
