Jason Knight has been a player that David Moyes has previously had his eye on, so could he be a target for Everton?

If you believe the rumors, it looks like the midfield is going to be a key focus of Everton's summer transfer business, with one of the more recent bits of gossip focused on Bristol City's Jason Knight.

TEAMTalk is reporting Everton interest in the Irishman after his successful season in the Championship, where he helped the Robins earn a spot in the playoff, where they fell to Sheffield United 6-0 on aggregate.

The report cites Moyes previous success in adding players from the Championship and turning them into successful Premier League players, noting that both Tim Cahill and Jarrod Bowen as previous examples of that type of move.

In that regard, Knight makes a lot of sense. He's still just 24 years old, having just reached that age in February, and showed himself capable of positional versatility this season with Bristol City, playing as both an attacking and central midfielder, along with moving out wide on the right side.

In both cases, Everton have needs, as both Idrissa Gana Gueye and Abdoulaye Doucoure will be out of contract when the season ends, and the other midfield depth, James Garner and Tim Iroegbunam, lacking pace or experience.

On the right side, both Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom are likely heading back to their parent clubs after season-long loan spells, and while Dwight McNeil has shown he can do that job, he cannot be the only option there. So a versatile player like Knight would be useful for the squad.

Knight scored three times this season, adding six assists and showing himself to be a good passer and carrier of the football. He'll certainly need to add some strength to his game to handle the rigors of the Premier League, but the football acumen appears to be there.

He's already been capped for the Republic of Ireland, featuring in 35 matches, including 23 starts, in the Irish midfield, where he's scored once, in a 2021 friendly against Andorra, a 4-1 win for his country.

The cost is good, too, as Transfermrkt has his current value at just €5 million heading into the summer, although Bristol City has yet to name an actual number that it would take to get it done.

The age and value make this a sensible move for Everton heading into the summer, although fans will need to be patient with the youngster as he gets up to the pace of the higher level.

It can't be the only way Everton strengthen the midfield, but it's a solid depth piece for a player who could contribute as the season progresses.
