Two more points dropped at Palace further dents Everton Euro hopes

On Sunday afternoon, the Blues were ultimately held to a 2-2 draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, despite twice leading in South London as hopes of European football next season receded further.

Everton have dropped twelve points in their last five Premier League matches with a draw at Brentford, then defeats to Liverpool and West Ham United, followed by the six-goal thriller against Manchester City, and now another 2-2 draw at Palace.

It has been an extremely frustrating few weeks for Toffees fans, with the hope of qualifying for Europe next season looking more and more unlikely as each result comes in.

The Blues are currently in tenth place in the League and, depending on other results, in particular the FA Cup final, eighth position could get a Europa League spot, so it is still mathematically possible.

Getting a European place would feel like a real bonus and a deserved outcome given the progress made during this campaign under David Moyes.

Even though it would be disappointing after getting so close to missing out on Europe, there is still plenty to be pleased about when the season finishes in two weeks time.

Although Everton are still regarded as a primarily defensive side that thrives under pressure and away from home, the team Moyes has built can and does play some very good attacking football, as evidenced in that 3-3 game with City and at Selhurst Park too.

Indeed, the away team twice took the lead against the Eagles, with James Tarkowski and then Beto finding the net to give the Toffees a chance to win, which Jean-Philippe Mateta would deny them.

Both of Moyes' much-maligned strikers, Beto and Thierno Barry, with his brace last weekend, have found a bit of goal-scoring form recently, and that has relieved the manager of some of the pressure in that crucial department.

In fact, it is that often lauded defence that has let the Blues down in these recent matches, with a total of fourteen goals conceded in those five games.

Jarrad Branthwaite's latest injury has certainly not helped matters, leaving Everton a little undermanned at centre-back, hence the constant rumours that Moyes wants to bring another defender in.

Perhaps it might be Maxime Esteve, a player I have long thought the Toffees should seriously consider signing, or bringing John Stones back to Merseyside this summer.

Along with perhaps further additions in central defence, Everton still need further options at full-back, especially on the right, to resolve the future of Jack Grealish and do all they can to keep Illiman Ndiaye and possibly secure a long-term replacement for the evergreen Idrissa Gueye.

And there is the question of further help up front, which, despite the goals that Beto and Barry have scored, is still a weakness.

So, the focus of the summer's transfer plans will be on strengthening the overall depth and quality of the squad, whether or not Everton qualify for Europe this time.
