Everton have been a bit more active in the transfer market since the beginning of July, with the recent signing of Thierno Barry representing a positive move to strengthen the club's anemic goal-scoring threat.
But that comes after a very quiet June in which the Toffees only confirmed the permanent signing of Carlos Alcarez who had been on loan since January.
As well as improving the first-team's striking options, Everton also need a host of new players in a number of different positions including at full-back and out wide.
Another area of the team that needs strengthening is central midfield. The Blues lost Abdoulaye Doucoure this summer and, apart from Idrissa Gueye, who has signed a new deal, lack experienced defensive midfielders.
There are several possible targets who Everton could turn to in order to solve this issue, and one of them is Wilfred Ndidi.
The Nigerian player is virtually certain to leave Leicester City after their relegation and has that small £9 million release clause in his contract makes him a very affordable option for clubs looking to sign an experienced and quality midfield enforcer.
Ndidi would be an excellent support for Gueye and a longer-term replacement for the Senegal veteran, when he does finally move on or eventually decline irreparably.
Again, though, as with other alleged targets, the Toffees need to move quickly if they want to secure the player with other Premier League clubs such as Manchester United, inevitably circling and ready to offer Ndidi a deal.
In the past, competing with the Old Trafford club would be almost certain to fail. However, United are in something of a chaotic period of change and uncertainty and have fallen down the Premier League, table finishing below Everton last season.
With many conflicting stories claiming different amounts of money are available to manager David Moyes as he searches for reinforcements this summer, the Blues are still taking their time to get deals over the line.
