Everton will make the trip down south to Wolverhampton for a second time this season on Tuesday, with a chance to beat Wolves for a second time and earn a place in the draw for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
This is the only third round tie that pits two Premier League clubs against one another, with clubs like Brighton (away to Barnsley), Chelsea (away to Lincoln City), and Liverpool (home to Southampton), among others, drawing lower division sides.
Still, it's a matchup that David Moyes will feel good about given the outcome of the first game, a 3-2 Everton win at Molineux on August 20. It was a bit of a back-and-forth affair, with Everton jumping out to an early lead via a goal from Beto in the 7th minute, which was answered by Hee-Chan Hwang in the 21st.
Iliman Ndiaye scored in the 33rd minute to give the Toffees the lead back, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's first Everton goal early in the second half made it 3-1. Joao Gomes would add some tension with a 79th minute strike, but the Toffees would hold on for all three points.
It will be interesting to see what Moyes opts to do with his lineup with another Premier League match this weekend, but there's little doubt that Everton could use a strong cup run this season.
Match Notes
This has been a fairly even fixture going back to August 2010. In that time span, Wolves have won seven times, Everton have won six, and there have been five draws.
After a 0-0 draw at Molineux on May 6, 2012, the two sides did not meet again until August 11, 2018, also at Molineux, after Wolves' relegation led to a lengthy spell in the lower divisions. That match ended in a 2-2 draw.
One player, Everton center back Phil Jagielka, played on both of those matches, and was sent off in the latter game in the 40th minute.
The only expected injury for Everton is center back Jarrad Branthwaite, who is still working his way back from a hamstring injury suffered in training before the start of the season. Merlin Röhl, who missed Saturday's Merseyside derby due to a slight hip injury, is expected to be okay for this week's run of matches, although there has been no official word.
For Wolves, the only reported injury is young striker Leon Chiwome, who tore his ACL in January.
