In a fairly surprising move, Wrexham AFC have signed former Ipswich Town winger Nathan Broadhead for £10 million, a figure that breaks the Red Dragon's club record transfer fee.
In and of itself, the signings of a rising Welsh club led by owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac (previously McElhenny) are not of great interest to Everton and its supporters. But this one is situation where it might at least perk the ears of Toffees for two reasons.
For one, Broadhead, a Welsh international, played for Everton's PL2 squad from 2016 until 2019, scoring 16 goals and adding 8 assists in his time at the club. Broadhead also made a few senior appearances for Everton, including a 9-minute cameo in a Europa League match against Apollon Limassol.
He went off to Burton Albion in League One on loan in 2019/2020, before returning for another season with the Toffees' PL2 team and a brief Premier League debut the following season.
That was followed by a season at Sunderland in League One, and half of a Championship campaign with Wigan Athletic, both on loan from Everton. And while he was generally successful during his spells (he scored 12 times for the Black Cats and 5 times for Wigan), he was sold to Ipswich in January 2023.
He's been consistently good for the Tractor Boys since then, racking up 33 goal contributions (23 goals, 10 assists) in 3 and a half seasons, although his first full run in England's top-flight league was not as successful (18 appearances, 7 starts, 2 goals in 702 minutes).
But it was good enough for Wrexham to more than triple the club transfer free record, allowing the 27-year-old to return to his native land to play his football.
The upside for Everton is that there might be a sell-on fee attached to Broadhead's signing, and while it won't be life-changing money, any bit of money they can add to the mix at this point would be helpful.
