France 2016 was a great international team, Moussa Sissoko not only got into that team but was actually a stand out player more than once during EURO 2016. Success on the international stage usually grabs the attention of clubs looking to spend, and Everton planned on joining in on the fun.

Rumour has it that the deal was so close to being done that the Everton staff were in disbelief when it all fell through, we were short of squad depth as usual, and Sissoko was going to be a record signing for us. Everton were willing to spend £30 million on Moussa, until Spurs swooped in on the last second, offering the same amount but also offering the opportunity of European Football.

With Everton and Spurs sharing similar league positions during recent years, maybe this was a planned move intended to stunt Everton’s season, but ultimately everything turned out great. Well, for Everton at least.

Everton ended up going with one of their backup plans and secured Enner Valencia on loan, but most importantly, we had £30 million instead of Sissoko. Newcastle fans are still reeling in awe that anyone would value him so highly, and therein lies the conundrum, no football fan would pay that much for him. I am truly baffled as to why Everton were willing to spend so much.

While these events were transpiring, Everton and Spurs fans were laughing at each other hoping the other team got stuck with him, I remember personally feeling elated when news broke that Spurs had secured him.

£30M on Sissoko, or £32M on Schneiderlin and Valencia?

Not signing him would prove vital to Everton’s season, since 66% of that unspent money would be used to purchase Schneiderlin from Manchester United, the Frenchman we all wanted. Discussion is now being had whether Sissoko is Spurs’ worst ever signing, which I think is a bit much, but after spending such a large amount of money you can see why.
