Before the last game during the previous season, Farhad Moshiri had been convinced enough by the football Everton were playing, and the protesting of the fans, that the decision was made to sack Roberto Martinez. It was an expensive act that would be the reason Everton did not gain a profit in 2015/16, then finding a replacement added extra costs. Was it all worth it?

Reports of Martinez’ severance state he was paid upwards of £10 million after signing a contract extension with Everton, it is an undeniably bloated payout, but the man did sign us Lukaku and Alcaraz so fair enough.

Giving the fans what they wanted may have seen like an easy option, and the sacking did act as a statement that Everton will no longer settle for mediocrity, but Moshiri always planned to hire Koeman, so he knew that the process of hiring the manager he wanted was going to cost even more.

Koeman ended up leaving Southampton to join Everton in the summer, for a reported £6 million, then even more money was spent acquiring all of the backroom staff he wanted; as was promised to him. So all in all we are looking at a total of over £20 million just to get Ron the Scone himself to join us, with additional promises of securing players at the club while bringing in new talent.

With the lack of successful cup runs, we have to turn to league success to see if Koeman has been worth the time, effort and money spent to acquire Moshiri’s initial focus. Considering the sale of John Stones being used in a monopoly to buy players, and taking into the account of the valuations of Tom Davies, Gana, Holgate, and Lukaku all rising under Koeman’s tenure, then it’s starting to look up for Koeman’s appraisal.

In the end though it doesn’t come down to opinion. Yes, Koeman has had Everton playing exciting football and developing the youth players, but for 7th place in the 2016/17 Premier League season, Everton will earn an estimated £130 million. So unequivocally yes, Koeman is worth every penny we spent and will spend on him.
