Everton offer £39 million for Mexican international Raul Jimenez
By Paul Taylor
Everton have reportedly made a big money offer for Raul Jimenez, but how realistic is it to expect the Mexican international to move to Goodison Park?
Everton are apparently at it again, making another ambitious offer for a top-level talent. As per talkSPORT, this time it’s Raul Jimenez.
Referencing a report from Portuguese newspaper The Record, talkSPORT writes that Everton have offered £39 million for the Mexican international. However, despite the fact this is a significant amount of money, it probably won’t be enough.
According to talkSPORT, Benfica reportedly turned down a £44 million bid from China in January. You imagine the Blues would have to at least match this offer, for the reigning Primeira Liga champions to even consider letting Jimenez go.
Everton will also face competition from at least two other Premier League teams, with Liverpool and West Ham United apparently also in the running. However, you have to wonder if they are all wasting their time?

It has only been a year since Benfica purchased the remaining 50 percent of Jimenez’s economic rights, to bring his total transfer value to around £22 million. In the process, this apparently made him the most expensive player in Portuguese football history (as well as the most expensive Mexican player).
In that respect, why would Benfica be looking to move the 26-year old so soon, especially with him still having three years left on his contract? One possible reason could come from the events of last season.
During the 2016/17 campaign, Jimenez only started six games, with another 13 appearances as substitute. And while he still scored seven leagues goals and 11 overall — while adding one assist — this could be an indication the forward has fallen out of favour.
Whether this is a reach or not, you can’t blame Everton for showing interest in a player who has also scored 12 goals in 54 games for Mexico. However, apart from the high fee, any move should come with a health warning about dealing with his agent.
Back in August 2015, Jimenez was set to complete a loan deal to West Ham, but it was called off after he failed to show up for his medical. He claimed he missed his flight after oversleeping, but reports indicated agent Jorge Mendes suggested he spurn the move, in favour of going to Benfica.
It’s tough to argue with Everton’s ambition. However, do you think making such a big money offer for Jimenez is a wise move? Further, would you be on board with any decision to increase their bid? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
