Everton are reportedly making a late bid to sign Dutch international Jairo Riedewald, to boost their options in defence.

As Everton prepare to kick off their pre-season schedule on Thursday, there will be a multitude of questions to consider regarding the squad. However, this will not include the starting duo in central defence, where — barring something unexpected — Ashley Williams and Michael Keane will be on the field when the Premier League campaign begins exactly one month today.

However, it is often wise to have good depth at every position when considering the length of any season, especially when you add in European competition. In that respect, the latest speculation surrounding the Blues should come as no surprise.

As reported by the Echo‘s Greg O’Keeffe, Everton are attempting to sign Jairo Riedewald. The highly-regarded youngster currently plays for Ajax and has made three appearances for the Dutch senior international team.

As such, manager Ronald Koeman’s apparent interest in Riedewald is entirely understandable. This interest becomes even more understandable when considering his versatility, which also allows him to play at left back and as a defensive midfielder.

Interestingly, if Koeman is to be successful in his pursuit, it will mean upsetting former international teammate, Frank de Boer. Until this latest development, Riedewald was expected to move to Crystal Palace.

Now, the 20-year-old has a dilemma on his hands. Does he still move to Crystal Palace to link up again with de Boer — who was his former coach at Ajax — or pick Everton, who have a bigger reputation and can offer European football?

According to O’Keeffe, Riedewald is rated at around £8.6 million. Considering there is now competition for his signature, don’t be surprised if this valuation increases.
