Everton eyeing Islam Slimani as alternative to Olivier Giroud
By Paul Taylor
Everton are considering turning their attention from Olivier Giroud to Islam Slimani, but is the Leicester City striker what they’re looking for?
It’s no secret Everton would love to sign Olivier Giroud, to help compliment their current striking options. However, recent speculation has indicated Giroud’s preference is to remain at Arsenal and fight for his place.
In addition, even if the French international does leave the Gunners, he would apparently prefer a return to his home country. As such, the Blues need to look at alternative options for up front.
In this respect, it appears Everton have already done just that. As per a report from Neil Fissler of the Sunday Express, Ronald Koeman is considering switching his attention to Islam Slimani.
While this may come as a surprise to some, it isn’t the first time the Toffees have been linked with Slimani. Back in January last year, the Daily Mail reported that Everton were keeping an eye on the striker.
Eventually, Slimani moved to Leicester City last summer, for a reported club record fee of £28 million. However, after just one season at Leicester, concerns have re-emerged, in respect of his consistency.
By the end of the 2016/17 campaign, the 29-year-old had only scored seven Premier League goals (and eight in all competitions). In addition, his shot accuracy left a lot to be desired.
However, in defence of Slimani, it should be noted he only started 16 league games for Leicester. He is excellent in the air and strong – attributes Koeman looks for in a player.

Prior to moving to Leicester, the Algerian international was prolific during his time with Sporting CP. In a little more than three seasons with the Portuguese side, he scored 57 goals in 109 appearances.
Slimani has also enjoyed success at the highest level, scoring 25 times in 49 games for Algeria. He was part of the squad which went to the 2014 World Cup and is the fourth-highest goalscorer in team history.
Perhaps the biggest obstacle facing the Blues, is the fact the former JSM Chéraga player still has four years remaining on his contract at Leicester. As such, you imagine he would not come cheap, assuming the Foxes even allow him to leave.
Overall, Slimani’s potential for inconsistent play would make him a risky — and probably costly — signing for Everton. However, when considering all the available information, he is arguably still a gamble worth taking.
