Everton interested in Las Palmas defender Mauricio Lemos
By Paul Taylor
Everton are looking to strengthen their defence, but face stiff competition from the likes of Inter Milan and Roma, if they are to sign Mauricio Lemos.
During Ronald Koeman’s first season as Everton manager, the team conceded 44 goals, tying with Arsenal for the sixth-best defence in England’s top division. For further perspective, was their seventh-best defensive record in 25 years of the Premier League.
However, one thing we’ve learned about Koeman, is his insatiable appetite to succeed. There was never any chance he was going to rest of his laurels.
As such, the 54-year-old has taken the necessary steps this summer, to strengthen the back line. This included signing the likes of Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane and Cuco Martina.
Now, it seems Koeman still hasn’t finished looking for ways to boost the defence. At least not, according to the Daily Star.
The Star‘s Peter Truman writes that the Blues are aiming to make a move for centre-back Mauricio Lemos. Truman adds the speculation was first reported by Spanish newspaper Marca.
This leads to the question of if Lemos is the type of player who can improve Everton’s defence? In theory, the answer is a simple “yes”.
The 21-year old is considered as a rising young talent. Last year, LFS Scouting described him as ‘the new Uruguayan phenomenon’.
As you’d hope with anyone in defence, Lemos has a strong presence, is excellent in the air and good on the ball. He also offers the bonus of a scoring threat, after notching five goals during last season.
The Uruguayan Under-23 would theoretically provide immediate competition for Ashley Williams in central defence. As good as Williams still is, he will turn 33 next month.

Truman notes that Lemos has a release clause of around £27 million. However, it’s apparently possible Las Palmas could listen to offers as low as £18 million.
Whether this is the case or not, Everton will face strong competition for the Rivera-born player’s services. Many of Europe’s top sides are apparently interested in him, including Inter Milan and Roma. (Barcelona and Manchester City were also looking at him last summer.)
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the Toffees have been linked with Lemos. Back in April, the Mirror‘s Steve Bates reported that Koeman scouted him in a La Liga game versus Athletico Bilbao.
Ironically, the youngster endured a nightmare game, as Las Palmas lost 5-1 and he was substituted at half time. Regardless, based on the latest speculation, this has not dissuaded Everton from pursuing him further.
