Everton: Signing Diego Costa unlikely to become a reality
By Paul Taylor
With speculation linking Everton to Diego Costa, what are their chances of actually signing the mercurial striker?
On the one hand, we entirely understand Ronald Koeman’s recent comments, that the transfer window should close before the start of the league season. However, when considered the latest speculation involving Everton, we also appreciate the added excitement that comes with the overlapping of the transfer window and the beginning of the Premier League campaign.
For anyone who has been otherwise engaged/distracted, we’re referring to the recent news involving Diego Costa. More specifically, as reported by the Guardian‘s Simon Burnton, Everton are interested in signing the Brazilian.
Burnton’s article originated from Koeman’s press conference on Thursday, prior to their game versus Husduk Split. When asked about Costa, the Blues’ manager said:
"“Of course you like to sign players for the future, but if you can get the best one that way, then why not?”"
‘That way’ refers to potentially signing Costa on loan. He is currently AWOL back home in Brazil and demanding a move to Atletico Madrid, but cannot play for them until January next year.
The mercurial stiker has been holed up in Brazil, since Chelsea told him he can leave, apparently via text message. (Which seems to be the preferred method to break up with someone these days.)
There’s no denying Costa would immediately boost the Toffees’ front line, with an excellent strike rate that has seen him score 52 goals in just 89 Premier League games. And even though it might only be for four months, Koeman seems to be okay with this.

However, is it really realistic to expect the Chelsea misfit to end up at Goodison Park? It seems unlikely in our humble opinion, not that we blame the Everton manager for showing an interest.
Costa seems to have had enough of England altogether and just wants to return to his former club. The main card Koeman has to play, is to offer him the chance at regular first team football, rather than sitting around doing nothing until January.
In addition, as the 28-year-old relaxes in Brazil, he’s losing out on around £140,000 per week in wages. No matter how rich he already is, that adds up to a lot of lost money over the course of another four months.
Overall, we just don’t envision Costa-to-Everton becoming a reality. However, this is one of those occasions where we would have absolutely no issue with being proved wrong.
