Everton preparing to make a move for Porto captain Ivan Marcano
By Paul Taylor
Everton are reportedly interested in Porto’s Ivan Marcano, but how realistic is it to expect the defender to end up on Merseyside?
While concerns remain about their striking options — or lack thereof — there are no such doubts in central defence for Everton. With the likes of Ashley Williams, Phil Jagielka and the recently signed Michael Keane in tow, this confidence is perfectly understandably.
However, the Blues appear to be proponents of the saying, that you can never have too much of a good thing. At least that’s our perspective, if the latest speculation is to be believed.
As per a report from the Daily Mail‘s Simon Jones, Everton are apparently lining up a move for Ivan Marcano, once the January transfer window opens. His current contract with Porto expires in August next year and he is allowed to talk to foreign clubs in January, with the option to sign a pre-contract agreement.
Jones goes on to write the Blues actually scouted Marcano last month. However, Porto were allegedly only prepared to sell him at an inflated price.
This leads us to believe the Portuguese club would prefer not to sell their captain, as they attempt to agree a new deal with him. However, if this is not possible between now and January, Everton could take advantage by making an offer to Porto, who may not want to risk losing the player for nothing.

There are a couple of other intriguing aspects to consider regarding Marcano, as reported by Sportslens. The first is, he apparently turned down the chance to join the Blues, when they made enquiries during August.
In addition though, the 30-year-old has allegedly also rejected two new contract proposals from his current club. His approach seems to indicate he is operating from a position of strength, or at least believes he is.
Regardless, you can appreciate why Ronald Koeman wants to sign Marcano, who has extensive experience and would provide excellent depth. He offers some versatility, with his ability to play at left back, while also providing the bonus of the occasional goal, as evidenced by a career-high four last season.
Whether the Spanish-born defender ends up moving to Merseyside is open to debate at this juncture. Regardless, it will be interesting to keep an eye on this storyline, when the next transfer window opens in 2018.
