Everton are reportedly one of three Premier League teams aiming to sign West Bromwich Albion captain Jonny Evans in January.

When Everton signed Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane during the summer, it was hoped this would strengthen their defence. However, despite the consistently impressive form of Pickford, this has not been the case.

This is perhaps best evidenced by the Blues entering this weekend’s slate of games, with the third-worst defence in the Premier League. New manager Sam Allardyce should be able to tighten things at the back to some extent, but it won’t be enough.

As such, expect Everton to use the upcoming transfer window to bring in reinforcements. In fact, they apparently already have at least one target in mind.

According to the Mirror‘s Darren Lewis, the Blues will make a move for centre-back Jonny Evans in January. Everything about this apparent ambition makes a lot of sense.

Evans would provide some much-needed leadership for the Blues. He is captain for both West Brom and Northern Ireland, which tells you everything about how his teammates perceive him.

The 29-year old’s experience is also a tremendous asset, with few situations likely to faze him. Apart from playing 67 times at international level, he has had success at the highest level in club football, winning three Premier League titles while with Manchester United.

However, there are a couple of major factors which will impact the Toffees’ chances of signing Evans. The other clubs apparently interested in signing him are West Ham and, more importantly, Manchester City.

According to Lewis, Manchester City attempted to sign the Belfast-born player in August, but the move broke down. However, if they do go back in for him, he would surely be tempted to join a club leading the Premier League and playing regular Champions League football.

The other factor is Evans’ current employer. He is under contract until the end of next season and you imagine the Hawthorns would prefer to keep him around, at least until the end of the 2017/18 campaign.
