Everton are reportedly once again interested in Lamine Kone, but is it really such a good idea to sign the Sunderland centre-back?

Everton have an ongoing, non-existent relationship with Lamine Kone. In other words, they have had an apparent interest in signing him, which dates back to August last year.

At the time, the Blues reportedly offered Sunderland £18 million for Kone. The deal seemed all but signed, with the defender even travelling to Merseyside.

However, the deal was rejected at the 11th hour. Part of the reason related to then Sunderland manager David Moyes being unable to find a suitable replacement.

There was further speculation Everton might return for Kone during this past summer. However, nothing materialised.

Regardless, the Blues are apparently set to renew their pursuit of the 28-year-old, when the transfer window reopens in January. At least according to The Sun‘s Alan Nixon.

Nixon claims the reason for the revived interest comes down to Sam Allardyce’s familiarity with the player. The Toffees’ new manager previous signed Kone, when he was in charge of Sunderland back in 2016.

However, any speculated move will be dependent on the player affectionately known as “The Tank” proving his fitness. His availability this season has been compromised by dealing with a knee injury.

Even then, Allardyce will want to think long and hard about signing Kone. As Nixon notes, his collapsed move to Everton caused friction and he hasn’t been the same player since.

To a certain extent, the Ivory Coast international admits the failed move impacted his form. As reported by Alex Harris of the Express, he said:

"“Everton, they are not a small club. There were other clubs interested too. But it was not concrete like Everton. It was a very good opportunity for me. A golden opportunity. They are playing for the top positions. They could be in Europe. So it was an interesting challenge for me. At the time, I was disappointed.”"

Kone is under contract until September 2021. However, as per Harris, Sunderland will reportedly accept a cut-price deal to get him off their wage bill.

In truth though, you have to wonder if making a move for the Paris-born centre-back is a smart thing to do? His pro-longed funk leads to questions about his mental fortitude, an attribute Allardyce values tremendously in his players.
