Everton will reportedly make a move for Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke to bolster their striking options, but is he the solution up front?

Everton need another striker; this much we know. However, there will likely be mixed feelings about one of their alleged targets.

As per Chris Beesley of the Daily Post, the Blues are reportedly plotting a move for Christian Benteke when the transfer window reopens in January. Whether this is actually a good idea, is open to question.

Certainly, you can understand why Sam Allardyce would like to sign Benteke, after they worked together at Crystal Palace last season. The combination of Allardyce’s management and 15 league goals from his striker, helped save the Eagles from relegation.

However, the 27-year-old has seen a stark drop in his production this season. In fact, he only scored his first goal of the campaign on Saturday, in the 3-0 win against Leicester City.

There is also the question of if Benteke is truly a team player, after his recent actions in Crystal Palace’s match with Bournemouth. He ignored instructions and took a late penalty which he then missed, costing his team two vital points.

The Belgian international later apologised for his actions. However, it doesn’t change the optics that in a critical moment for the Eagles, his selfish actions took precedence over what was best for the team.

The question is, does this represent a one-off for a player desperate to break his goal drought, or is it indicative of who Benteke really is? In fairness, we all make mistakes and at least Allardyce is well-placed to decide what type of person he is, after working so closely with him.

It’s also worth noting most strikers are selfish/single-minded when it comes to scoring. Talking of which, it is the African-born player’s lack of goals this season which is probably more concerning.

Is this the sign of a player who is in decline, or just someone who in a slump? Given Benteke’s age and resume of success with the likes of Aston Villa and Liverpool, you would have to lean towards the latter.

In this respect, Everton will need to be confident in their assessment, before making any approach. Of course, there will then be the issue of if Crystal Palace will even let the striker leave, as they continue their battle against relegation.
