Well Everton might not be Premier League champions this season on the pitch but it seems the Blues have topped the table in one respect – their fans are the heaviest drinkers of all twenty teams!

According to a survey revealed in the Liverpool Echo supporters of Everton were in first place out of all Premier League clubs fans on their average weekly imbibing of alcohol.

Evertonians drink an average of 43 units a week according to this survey. That’s quite some boozing Blues fans!

And as the paper points out maybe the team has driven its fans to such lengths and given how disastrous this season has been that wouldn’t be a surprise.

But then let’s be honest it’s not like Everton have actually had as a bad a season as West Ham or Southampton and their fans rank much lower down the list.

Maybe its the difference between expectation and reality that’s the real reason?

This story though does in a light-hearted way underline the general feeling of deep malaise that has infected the club this season.

Everton supporters have shown their feelings about the direction  of the team regularly over the past few matches and then after last weekend’s final home game against Southampton, many left before the obligatory ‘lap of honour’ at the end.

As we’ve said before this atmosphere can’t be allowed to go on into next season. Whether or not majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri is thinking of jettisoning Sam Allardyce this summer, his hand is almost being forced by this situation.

It’s impossible to imagine the club, its fans or the players being able to move forward while there is so much disillusionment and anger in the air.

I can’t remember things being this bad since the dark days of the mid-nineties when Everton were perennially flirting with relegation and were owned by Peter Johnson before Bill Kenwright took over.

So given all this the only real question is who out of the seemingly endless number of candidates does actually get the job.

One new face whose arrival seems to be getting closer is that of Marcel Brands.

The PSV Eindhoven Director of Football is coming to Everton according to an article in 101greatgoals.com and quoting the noted Merseyside football journalist, Paul Joyce.

If Brands does come to Goodison Park that would surely mean that Allardyce must be leaving as it’s difficult to imagine him not wanting some say in who is the team boss that he will be working with.

At any rate with the opening of the transfer window just a few weeks away its sure to be a busy, uncertain and probably surprising period for Everton.
