Everton should consider signing Silva

More transfer rumours are doing the rounds today and one of these links Everton once again with a move for PSG’s veteran centre-half Thiago Silva. So is this potential deal a good one for the Blues?

This story is one we’ve covered recently and once again as in so many of these stories, it is based on a historic link between the player and Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti. Although it’s also driven by the Toffees need for further defensive reinforcements.

Silva is yet another top draw player who has benefited from being under the wing of the Blues hugely experienced and successful manager during his time in Paris.

The Brazilian defender has become one of the most consistent and effective players in Ligue 1 over the past few years as PSG have totally dominated French domestic football.

Now though, the French champions have decided against offering him another contract and so he will become a free agent come the summer transfer window.

So the question is, given all that, should the Toffees make a move for Silva?

This is a difficult one to answer and there are several ways to look at this. At first glance given Silva’s age, it would make little sense and would be a significant departure from the transfer strategy of Marcel Brands.

And certainly signing a 35-year-old defender might seem like a bad choice for the Blues when Everton are supposedly trying to build a squad of players whose monetary and transfer market value will improve over time.

However, if he comes without a transfer fee, I actually think Silva might provide some much-needed experience and nous at the back, which would certainly help the Toffees current defenders, like Mason Holgate and perhaps Micheal Keane.

I also don’t think you can’t just exclusively buy young players without also providing some critical experience around them too, especially in key positions like central defence.

The Brazil player has some important qualities, which would, on paper at least, make him a decent addition. He does still seem a quality player who can perform on the highest stage and  isn’t in noticeable decline, at least not yet!

In particular his excellent passing ability would fit in very well with how Ancelotti seems to want to play out from the back.

And turning to Holgate, he especially might well benefit from what Silva can offer, as he looks to build on an increasingly impressive campaign in 2019-20.

The young Blues centre-back has had a breakthrough season this term and has the opportunity to become a key player under Ancelotti as the Italian tries to build a truly competitive Everton team.

In other news, Everton will apparently find out this week where the club’s first game after the Premier League re-start, will take place.

That game is of course the Merseyside derby, which was due to be played on Sunday the 21 June. There has been much talk that this game would be played at a neutral venue rather than at the grand old lady.

Now there is a meeting scheduled for Wednesday to decide whether the game can be played at the Blues home or will be take place at another ground.

Although playing the game without fans probably doesn’t make the venue itself particularly important, I do on balance think the game should be played at Goodison Park.

At least it would give the illusion to some extent anyway, that Everton are playing at home. That might, just might, help the players find the performance needed to overcome an equally rusty Liverpool and critically deny them the chance to win the title at the Blues hallowed ground.

Well perhaps we will see what the outcome is tomorrow, although that might not even be the final decision, as further pandemic developments might again force a re-think.
