Everton must keep an eye on Marseille star Florian Thauvin.

The Merseyside derby ended in a 0-0 stalemate but the Toffees rounded off a decent performance. The team looked rusty but considering that Everton last played a competitive game almost three months ago, we should cut some slack. However, Anthony Gordon created big headlines as he got his Everton debut that too in the feisty Merseyside derby. The 19 year old did a fine job at the right wing but there will be bigger concern for Carlo Ancelotti that was detected in the first game itself.

Taking nothing away from Anthony Gordon, Everton need a player for the right wing, The 19 year old showed flashes of potential but it is too soon to trust him completely. Gordon is in a developmental phase and shouldn’t be rushed at all. This brings Everton back to the transfer table. With Cengiz Under now also a target for Manchester United and Arsenal, the Merseysiders are exploiting other options. It might be worth noting that France World Cup winner Florian Thauvin has been put on the market by his current employers Olympique Marseille.

According to L’Equipe, Marseille are willing to part ways with their right winger if an offer of €20 million arrived for Thauvin. The 27 year old has seen his season hampered due to injuries, restricting him to only 20 minutes of football this term but it can’t be denied that Florian Thauvin isn’t a highly rated winger.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Florian Thauvin managed 18 goals and 9 assists in 37 games last season, as his brilliant individual performance helped Marseille finish 5th. The Corona Virus pandemic caused the suspension of Ligue 1 this term and PSG were declared winners with 68 points. Marseille qualified for next season’s Champions League, finishing second. However, UEFA have imposed a €3 million fine on Les Phoceens for violating FFP rules. The club board finds itself in dire need of funds to run the club and the fine is just added weight on the club’s already weakened finance.

Hence, OM are open to offload one of their brightest stars to generate funds. Everton must keep tabs of Florian Thauvin as the search for a clever right winger goes on. Thauvin has some experience of playing in the Premier League as the 27 year old spent one and a half season at Newcastle United but couldn’t achieve anything significant individually. His records in France support the claim that he is a top winger and barring the current season where he was knocked down due to repeated injuries, he has been on top of his game.

Available for €20 million, Marseille winger Thauvin is a much cheaper alternative to Roma’s Cengiz Under. The Blue team from the Merseyside must remain alert and try and work out a possible transfer.
