Everton must sign Lucas Torreira if Thomas Partey is signed by Arsenal.

The name of Thomas Partey has sprung up on every Arsenal fan’s newsfeed at least once in the past few months. The player himself is keen to move to Emirates and continue his rise in the footballing world. The Gunners are eager to have a beast style, powerful midfielder in their ranks.

The Ghanaian has a £42 million release clause and Atletico Madrid have made it clear that any team wanting the 27 year old will have to cough up £42 million and not a penny less. While the Los Rojiblancos try and lure Partey into signing a contract extension, chances of him staying are dim.

The Corona Virus pandemic consequences have resulted in clubs taking major financial hits and Arsenal are no exception to that. The North London club could be staring at losses as huge as £144 million for the next year. In a time when the club could be facing such a huge deficit, the board would be looking to generate cash in order to finance the purchase of Thomas Partey.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal is open to selling Matteo Guendouzi or Lucas Torreira to generate funds for Partey. Considering the arrival of the Ghanaian, one more place will be locked in the midfield. So, ideally selling one of the current midfielders will be the right thing to do and Everton must pay attention.

The Toffees can hit a jackpot if they manage to get Lucas Torreira to trade London for Merseyside. The Uruguayan has everything in the locker that Everton needs from an ideal midfielder.

He is a central midfielder who has shown the versatility to play in deeper positions even acting as an anchor or a pivot. He is a fierce driver of the ball and is an expert in breaking the opposition lines while driving the ball forward. Everton field themselves in a 4-4-2, a formation Torreira is similar with from his Sampdoria days.

We have noticed that Andre Gomes or Tom Davies often drop back to collect the ball and then drive forward while evading the opponent pressure. While Gomes looks comfortable in that role, Davies looks slightly off. Lucas Torreria is excellent in that department.

Under Ancelotti, the Toffees have adapted a more pragmatic approach with direct possession play key to the attack rather than having long periods with the ball. Torreria isn’t the best short passers in the game but has an eye to split the entire defence with accurate passes, easily suitable in direct possession play.

The South American is a brave ball winner and doesn’t refrain from putting challenges across the pitch. When other players would have their hearts in their mouth while committing such risky challenges, Torreira does it with alarming ease. The effective aggressiveness in his play is the typical South American attitude that is evident every time he steps on the field.

The 24 year old isn’t a preferred choice for Mikel Arteta and with Partey’s arrival almost apparent; Lucas Torreira might have to think of a future elsewhere. With the Gunners open to selling him, Everton must be one of the first teams to try and tempt the former Sampdoria man.

He is young, fits the bill and can help the team massively. The asking price is something we aren’t aware of but he will not cost more than £30 million which makes him cheaper than other targets like Allan and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
