Everton Midfield and Defence require major surgery

Central midfield is the biggest problem facing the Italian manager as he chopped and changed formations to find a combination that would work. Injuries cost The Royal Blues defensive midfielders, Jean-Phillipe Gbamin and Fabian Delph for much of the season.

Gbamin, who was expected to fill the hole left by Idrissa Gana Gueye,  missed almost the entire season and Delph only appeared 20 times.

Andre Gomes suffered what looked like a season-ending ankle injury in November 2019. He returned four months later, but didn’t look like quite the same player.

According to the Guardian, Ancelotti will have money to improve the squad and won’t have to sell to buy. However, Everton have already moved a number of players off their squad and will likely move more.

Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was an early target, but he prefers to play for Spurs.

Former manager Marco Silva tried to bring Abdoulaye Doucoure from his former club Watford but was rebuffed. However, with Watford’s relegation, the box-to-box midfielder is likely to move on.

According to the Daily Mirror, Everton is set to rekindle their interest in the midfielder, but face competition from Arsenal, who according to the report need to jettison salary to make a bid.

Carlo Ancelotti wants to improve his choices on the right wing with a number of players being linked in various reports. Despite the emergence of Mason Holgate and Jarrad Branthwaite, Ancelotti and Marcel Brands, the director of football want another centre-back.

The retirement of Leighton Baines means another challenge as the Toffees will seek a quality back-up. Although, it will be hard to replace Baines’ presence and leadership.
