Everton has been handed a massive transfer boost in chase of Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

The woes of Jordan Pickford have continued into the new season as well with tumbling performances with each passing game. The Englishman was superb against Spurs pulling some brilliant saves but has failed to keep that level of performance ever since. This has prompted Everton to go into the market and search for a keeper who can provide competition to Pickford. Sergio Romero of Manchester United is an option Everton is looking at.

A few weeks ago, Daily Mail reported that Carlo Ancelotti is unconvinced about Pickford’s long term future at the club. Since this news started circulating online, a number of keepers have been linked to the Merseysiders. Geronimo Rulli, Jasper Cillessen and Sergio Romero have been linked. Rulli made a transfer to Villarreal which leaves Cillessen and Romero on the shortlist.

Valencia wants to get rid of Jasper Cillessen as they aim to massively trim their wage bill. The Dutchman is their highest paid player and due to the current financial disaster at Valencia, the club will simply not be able to afford his wages. However, Los Che’s asking price is too high at around £32 million and one Everton bid has already been rejected, as per Marca.

This leaves Sergio Romero as a cheap and easily gettable option. The Argentine has fallen down the pecking order after the return of Dean Henderson. David De Gea and Henderson are expected to compete for the starting spot and Romero is expected to get demoted to being a third choice keeper.

According to Inside Futbol, Everton have made initial contact with the 33 year old to discuss a potential transfer to Merseyside. According to The Times, Sergio Romero is keen to join Everton and has made it known to the Toffees. The Argentine wants to challenge the sub-par Jordan Pickford. The Toffees are yet to establish communication channels with Manchester United but the talks between the player’s entourage are positive.

Sergio Romero has 39 clean sheets in 61 games for Manchester United, which is a very very impressive clean sheet ratio. Despite being 33, Sergio Romero has a lot left in him and can elevate any top tier side with his quality. Compared to Cilessen, Romero has experience of Football in England, doesn’t have audacious salary demands and will be cheaper.

Romero’s contract expires in 2021 and the Red Devils will be hoping to get a reasonable fee which could be around £5 million. Sergio Romero could provide instant competition to Jordan Pickford. I wouldn’t be surprised if Romero gets the nod ahead of the Englishman if the 33 year old makes the switch from Manchester United.

Joao Virginia or Jonas Lossl will never be able to challenge the 26 year old for the No.2 spot.

No matter what, a keeper needs to be signed to challenge Jordan Pickford or else his complacent attitude will keep on costing Everton.
