Reports coming to us from Italy today claim Adrien Rabiot is now a target of Manchester United and will not be joining Everton this summer.

Well that’s according to the Italian media – yes them again! In a story doing the rounds it’s claimed Juventus want a swap deal not with Everton, as has been previously reported, but instead with United in exchange for their defender Alex Telles.

The Italian giants are content for all these rumours to continue as they seem to be seeking a move for Rabiot who is surplus to requirements in Turin.

Rabiot is a player who has been repeatedly mentioned as a Toffees target in transfer rumours that go back to last year.

The unsettled Frenchman is apparently well-regarded by his former manager at PSG Carlo Ancelotti and so inevitably he is being linked with a move to Goodison Park to be re-united with the Italian. This is obviously a common theme with these sorts of players.

There did appear to be some basis for these rumours with the Blues midfield struggling again at times to control games this season and deliver enough support to the team’s attack.

So was there a need for further reinforcements in midfield and still at times a lack of energy and athleticism in the middle of the park.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Both of the two midfielders brought in by Ancelotti last summer, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure have suffered from injury problems this season.

Allan has been out for several spells and Doucoure has been missing from the team for several weeks and might not be back before next season.

Rabiot is a player who if he could deliver his best form would provide additional defensive strength in the centre of midfield given his qualities.

But then Jean-Philippe Gbamin returned from injury and it seemed as though he might have finally got over his multiple injury problems and be ready to resume his Everton career.

However, just as he returned from those absences he got hurt again in training and while it looks as though it isn’t too serious, it does raise further questions about his long-term health.

So it’s possible that stories about new defensive midfielders will be ongoing this summer and Rabiot’s name might well be included again.
