New day, new transfer rumour and according to the Daily Mail, Everton are interested in 18-year-old Metz midfielder Pape Sarr.

This Senegal international has made a big splash in the French league this season despite only getting regular football since late last year. Now he’s attracting attention from Everton among a number of others. He’s quick, athletic and a bit similar to Idrissa Gueye.

While the Blues probably have other more pressing transfer window priorities other than another midfielder – such as sorting out the future at right-back, bringing in a top class right-winger and also another striker to provide alternatives and competition to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison – getting more energy and drive in midfield is important.

Sarr is a player who could be ideal especially with the continuing problems surrounding the health and fitness of Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

The Ivory Coast player had only just finally recovered from the succession of injuries that had derailed his Everton career.

Then having come back unexpectedly early and been brought on in the match against Crystal Palace, he broke down again in training and is out until next season.

I think this latest setback has raised renewed questions about whether he will ever be strong enough to come back and consistently make the contribution hoped of him.

He is a strong, dynamic defensive midfielder who would add further energy and work rate to a midfield that again has sometimes lacked it again this season, particularly when Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure are out injured.

Without those two summer signings the Toffees struggled to impose themselves on opponents and offer enough protection in front of the defence.

Although Carlo Ancelotti has apparently ruled out a move for a replacement for Gbamin, there are other possible candidates that Everton might consider if they are thinking of bringing in another midfeidler of this type.

Sarr given his age might be a very affordable option with the potential to improve further, although buying teenage players with potential hasn’t always worked out that well for the Blues.
