Allegiance To Liverpool

Rafael Benitez will be best known for his time at Liverpool. During his 6 years at Anfield, he won the 2005 UEFA Champions League, winning 3-2 on penalties against A.C. Milan after his side completed a remarkable comeback in Istanbul coming back from 3-0 down to 3-3 after extra time. In 2006 he won the UEFA Super Cup and the FA Cup, and in 2007 the FA Community Shield.

Despite all these honours he wasn’t able to win the Premier League with Liverpool finishing 2nd in the 2008-09 season. He also took Liverpool to the 2007 UEFA Champions League final but lost 2-1 to the side he previously beat in Istanbul, A.C. Milan. He is still remembered fondly by the Liverpool faithful for what he achieved at Anfield. Plenty of players have moved in both directions between Anfield and Goodison, but never a manager.

Everton fans should hope that this record stays intact because not only is Benitez the wrong man for the Toffees but also if he were hired, the passion and drive that the fans expect to see in a manager will be missing due to his allegiance to his former side and Everton’s fiercest rivals, Liverpool. Loyalty is an important trait that tells a lot about a manager and if Everton want that in their next coach, they shouldn’t be looking to bring in the Spanish tactician.
